At the Middle School Level, I believe it is important to make sure that the basics are there so that absorbing the more difficult concepts ahead in Algebra will not be affected by a lack of basic computation and conceptual skills.
Algebra builds critical thinking, problem-solving, and logical reasoning skills.
It's the foundation for higher math and essential for various careers in STEM, finance, and beyond. The concepts can also be difficult to grasp right away, and I find that having a variety of ways to explain a concept is indispensable.
Geometry teaches students to think logically, visualize, and solve spatial problems. It's crucial for fields like engineering, architecture, and design. Plus, it enhances problem-solving and analytical skills, benefiting various aspects of life. Two-column proofs are usually where kids get very confused, as it is a thinking process that is different than anything they've studied in math before.
Pre-Calculus bridges the gap between Algebra and Calculus, building a strong foundation for higher-level math. It enhances problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills, which are essential for success in STEM fields and beyond. Pre-Calculus is another high-leverage point in a math student's 'career'. If they get turned off to Pre-Calculus, the likelihood of pursuing more advanced math classes or careers drops precipitously.
Trigonometry builds a strong foundation for higher-level math and science. It's essential for fields like engineering, physics, and computer graphics. It also enhances problem-solving, logical reasoning, and spatial visualization skills. Trigonometry also stretches the student's ability to visualize and mentally manipulate the various trigonometric functions. This is the skill that takes them from memorizing formulas to understanding why and how they are used.
I offer academic coaching to help students set goals, stay organized, and develop strategies for academic success. I help students build confidence and motivation and provide ongoing support. This support can be very useful during college application or a sports season.
The SAT and ACT are high-leverage moments for a student, especially if a high score is required for them to compete at their chosen schools. These tests are quite conceptual at their heart, and my focus on understanding the underlying concepts leads to an easier time with many of the trickier SAT/ACT math questions.
These tests are often taken by students who have not come from a math-heavy college curriculum and need a refresher into things they learned before and instruction on things that they never really got. Additionally, students at this level are more in control of their own education and can better identify the areas where support is needed.
I started tutoring LSAT at the request of a tutoring company, and it has become one of my new favorite subjects. The application of logic and an often pedantic approach to individual words is a new challenge for a lot of students. My fall 2024 wave of students is about to get their scores, and I will update you with score improvements.
